Jail Prison and Deaf People: Otis' Story

Описание к видео Jail Prison and Deaf People: Otis' Story

Once incarcerated, prisoners often lose many rights and live in oppressive conditions, despite the Eighth Amendment supposedly protecting them from cruel and unusual punishment. Otis reflects on the issues he faced as a Black Deaf prisoner in a Virginia state prison, and how he worked with fellow inmates to resolve some of these issues. One example: when he learned that Deaf prisoners had to pay out of their own pockets for basic items such as note paper and pencils, essentials for communication in a hearing environment, Otis led a fight to get these provided at no cost. #deafinprison #deafreturningcitizens #lackofaccess
