Bulgaria started receiving liquefied natural gas from the Alexandroupolis terminal. Bulgarian Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov was there for the departure of the first delivery.
"This is a historic moment for Bulgaria and for the entire region, because after a visionary decision we made a few years ago, today we are getting real diversification," said Minister Malinov.
He added that the state mining company "Bulgargaz" has reserves of 1 billion cubic meters of blue fuel per year for the next 10 years.
The liquefied natural gas terminal at the Greek city of Alexandroupolis is already in commercial operation as of Tuesday, the Greek company Gastrade said. Bulgaria's Bulgartransgaz is a shareholder in the terminal with 20%.
The development of this infrastructure is considered particularly important for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, because it is believed to provide opportunities to free themselves from Russian dependence on gas supplies, an issue that has become the focus of political attention following the sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.
