This interesting device caught my eye while I was browsing for tech deals at my local Goodwill. Unfortunately the box that was for sale did not have the device inside. My curiosity ultimately got the better of me and I bought one from Ebay to open up and see what’s inside.

After taking the scanner cartridge apart, I found a very beautiful part inside responsible for scanning images & documents into a digital format. The IS-22 Color Scanning Cartridge is allegedly capable of 360dpi Color scans, and plugs directly into the same spot that your ink cartridge would typically go. With the help of drivers and software, it repurposes your printer's existing hardware and turns it into a completely different device. How cool is that!?

I believe the part inside to be a Linear CCD, or Charge-Coupled Device. There looks to be a line of photodiode elements on the chip, and I counted a total of 130 (I’m sure I’m off by a few) unmasked sensing elements. On one side of the array is 8 masked elements, and on the other side is only 1. If anyone has any additional insight as to what this part is, and how it can be operated to scan in color, I’d love to know! The silicon chip is made by Canon, and has the number LZ400J, which didn’t lead to any useful information.

Even though I just so happen to have a compatible printer, I wasn't able to test the cartridge in this video. I don’t have the printer or scanner cartridge drivers available, and I would prefer to set up a dedicated Windows XP PC to run this instead of a VM on the PC that I use everyday to download and try out sketchy drivers on. Perhaps I’ll revisit this in a future video, or perhaps you can convince your favorite tech YouTubers to try it out themselves 😉.
