“This Pretty Planet” by Tom Chapin

This is a beautiful children’s folk song that can be sung in a round, written by Tom Chapin and John Forster. Somehow I didn’t hear this song until I was an adult! Kateri Lavacek taught this to me and I used it as a lullaby when I taught early childhood music classes at UNT.

I got to spend time at my sister’s house yesterday and as I was admiring her garden beds full of wildflowers and native plants, I thought of this song. “You’re a garden, you’re a harbor, you’re a holy place.” I grabbed Lauren’s guitar, taught it to some of our kiddos, and we even sang it in a three-part round!

The original song is in a different meter (4/4) and we are singing it in 6/8, so it feels just a bit different from the original. Isn’t it a perfect folk song? You can find Tom Chapin’s recording anywhere music is found.

This Pretty Planet spinning through space,
You’re a garden, you’re a harbor,
You’re a holy place

Golden sun going down,
Gentle blue giant, spin us around

All through the night,
Safe till the morning light
