The Callan Method is a method of teaching English to non-native speakers of the languages. It has its roots in audiolingualism: it is teacher-centred, avoids the learner's mother tongue and places a strong emphasis on the development of listening and speaking skills.
The method was created by Robin Callan, from Cambridgeshire, England in the 1960s. His philosophy was that students should, from the outset, be exposed to the target language spoken at regular speed and that pronunciation errors should always be corrected immediately. He felt strongly that classes should be engaging and dynamic and that learners must be actively involved throughout. Callan spent ten years writing and perfecting his Method then opened the first language school dedicated to using it, in Oxford Street, London.
