What Most Jews Around the World Feel After Macron’s Declaration at the UN – Sept 22, 2025

On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, a time of reflection and renewal, Jews across the world listened with heavy hearts to the words spoken by President Emmanuel Macron at the United Nations. His declaration was not just a political statement — it carried a symbolic weight that cannot be ignored.

For our people, history is not abstract. We carry memory like a living inheritance. We know how the words of leaders have, time and again, opened the door to catastrophe. From medieval rulers who expelled us, to politicians who incited against us in the 19th century, to those who enabled or excused the horrors of the 20th — we remember. And when a leader of France, with its long and complicated history toward Jews, stands on the global stage and speaks in ways that can embolden those who hate us, it reverberates deeply.

The feeling among Jews today is not only disappointment. It is a sense of betrayal. A sense that, once again, the Jewish people are being placed at the center of a dangerous narrative — one that others will eagerly use as a weapon against us.

President Macron may not intend it, but intentions are not what history records. History records the impact of words. And words, as we know too well, can destroy.
