Determination of seed color patterns in common bean by MYB-bHLH-WD40 complexes and temperature

An NAPB webinar by Dr. Travis Parker of UC Davis discussing:

Seed color patterns are critical for differentiating crop market classes.

In common bean, we identified mutations related to five major color pattern genes, all of which were members of MYB-bHLH-WD40 MBW complexes. One gene showed strong parallelism, with 7 independent parallel mutations.

Strong associations between color and temperature existed in white-mottled varieties.

These results demonstrate the importance of MBW complexes and temperature in the establishment of seed color patterning.
