Go West Old Guy, Go West and get out of Hurrican Ian's path. Stay out of flood zones. - 2023 Ep 67

This is a long one. It is Sept. 30, 2022 and after breakfast with the guys at the Blue Ridge Gathering (BRG) I pack up and head west. Hot Springs Campgrounds looks like it has seen flooding before and with all the warnings about the rain that Hurricane Ian is going to bring, it only seems wise to change plans. Luckily, I have no fixed schedule so I can do that. Looks like the weather in Kentucky will be sunny and seeing that I have never been to Kentucky, I decide that’s where I am going. I was supposed to meet a channel friend there a few weeks ago but due to health reasons he couldn’t make it. I ride the whole day through new-to-me roads and areas. A nice mix of secondary roads and some divided highway. Stopped at the Forbus General Store for a break and ice cream. Stopped at too many MacDonalds, mostly to take advantage of their wifi. There seems to be some problems with the National Parks Service’s reservation system. I can see there are available sites at Mammoth Cave Campgrounds but I can’t actually book the sites. I press on and arrive slightly after dark. The campground kiosk is not manned so I decide I will just find an unoccupied site and set up. Surely that’s a safe thing to do when it is close to 8:30 pm. Just before I crawled into my bed, a young couple who had booked the site back in April, showed up to claim their site. Darn!
