SUMMARY

This video is an introduction to the level 3 award in education and training and the level 4 certificate in education and training, two qualifications that are designed for people who want to teach or train in adult education.

An instructor is a teacher who delivers practical skills or vocational training to learners, such as sports, fitness, beauty or construction. A lecturer is a teacher who delivers academic or theoretical knowledge to learners, such as maths, science, history or languages. The role of an assessor a teacher who evaluates the learners’ progress and achievement against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the course. An assessor may use various methods to assess the learners’ work, such as tests, assignments, observations or portfolios.

An assessor needs to provide fair, valid and reliable assessments that reflect the learners’ abilities and skills. A coach is a teacher who supports and guides learners to achieve their goals and improve their performance, such as in sports, business or personal development. A mentor is a teacher who provides advice, feedback and encouragement to learners, especially those who are new or inexperienced in the subject area.

A tutor is a teacher who offers individual or small group support to learners who need extra help or challenge with their learning. A tutor may work with learners who have specific learning difficulties or disabilities, who are underachieving or overachieving, or who want to prepare for exams or assessments. The responsibility of a teacher is to follow and implement the rules and regulations of the organisation they work for, such as health and safety, equality and diversity, safeguarding and data protection.

The process of planning, preparing and delivering effective and engaging lessons that meet the needs and interests of the learners. The process of assessing the learners’ work using various methods, such as tests, assignments, observations or portfolios, and keeping accurate and up-to-date records of their progress and achievement. A teacher needs to share information, ideas and resources with other professionals, coordinate their roles and responsibilities with them, seek advice or support from them when needed, refer or signpost learners to them when appropriate, and respect their expertise and authority.

Personal boundaries are the limits that a teacher sets for themselves in relation to their personal life and their professional role. A teacher needs to maintain a professional distance from the learners and avoid inappropriate or unethical behaviour, such as favouritism, harassment or exploitation. A teacher also needs to protect their own physical, mental and emotional health and well-being by managing their workload, stress levels and personal issues.

A teacher needs to respect the roles and responsibilities of other professionals and does not interfere with their work or undermine their authority. A teacher also needs to protect their own professional reputation and credibility by following the code of conduct and standards of their profession and organisation.
