In this episode, we continue examining California’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). This time we visit Woodland Hills, a community in the western San Fernando Valley where suburban development meets the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Using the official CAL FIRE hazard maps as a reference, this video looks at how wildfire hazard zones extend into parts of Woodland Hills, particularly along the southern edge of the neighborhood near the hills and open space areas.

While much of Woodland Hills appears fully suburban, the transition into wildfire-prone terrain happens quickly as streets approach the foothills. In these edge areas, homes sit closer to brush-covered slopes and canyon corridors that can increase ember exposure during major wildfire events.

During the episode, we point out property features that Zone Zero standards are designed to address. Many homes in the area were built decades ago, before ember-driven wildfire science shaped construction and landscaping practices.

We highlight common elements within the first five feet of structures that may influence ignition risk, including:
