Presenta un corpo molto compresso ai fianchi ed ha una forma ovaloide, ha una bocca abbastanza piccola, le pinne dorsale e anale sono a forma di ovale ed ampie, la caudale è a delta, dagli angoli arrotondati. Le pinne ventrali si sono filiformi e molto mobili, servono sia come recettori del gusto che come organi tattili. La livrea varia da specie a specie e va dall' azzurro e rosso al verde e giallo marrone con sfumature madreperla. Il disegno presenta strisce verticali o puntini anche qui a seconda della specie. Le specie più conosiute sono: Trichogaster Chuna,Trichogaster Fasciata, Trichogaster Labiosa ,Trichogaster Lalius,Trichogaster Trichopterus, Trichogaster Trichopodus, Trichogaster Pectoralis, Trichogaster Leeri. E' consigliabile metterli in vasche chiuse, inoltre, tenere il coperchio chiuso innalzerà l' umidità di supercicie e il calore, cosa molto salutare per questi pesci. L' aspettativa di vita di un Gourami è di 3/8 anni. Pesci consigliati per la convivenza: Brachidanio e Rasbora, Corydoras, Rineloricaria, botia sidthimunki. Sconsigliati pesci territoriali come ciclidi. La vasca deve essere ben piantumata e avere rifugi e piante galleggianti per evitare combattimenti e per fornire sufficienti superfici per la costruzione del nido. Necessitano di un buon sistema di filtraggio o frequenti cambi d' acqua, poco movimento dell' acqua e luce non troppo forte. Il maschio è molto colorato, mentre la femmina è meno attraente, grigio-argento, inoltre il ventre è più rotondo e il bordo posteriore della pinna dorsale è meno appuntito. Sono pesci ovipari e a seconda della specie, utilizzano l'incubazione orale o depongono in acque aperte e rilasciano le uova galleggianti o nei nidi di bolle. Sono onnivori e accettano secco in scaglie, pellets e fiocchi, artemie saline, larve di zanzara e chironomus, vegetali come spinaci e lattuga bolliti, cetrioli e zucchine.
