In Trumann, Arkansas, police did a welfare check around noon on July 2, 2025 at a home on the 600 block of South Ozark Avenue after an anonymous caller raised concerns about a child living there.

Officers tied the residence to Samantha Lyn Platz (38) and her boyfriend Boddie E. Williams, and the call quickly turned into a larger investigation because of what officers reported finding inside the property.

Officers said the house hit them with an overwhelming ammonia stench and they observed cat urine/feces, trash, and numerous cats throughout, with fleas/gnats getting on officers’ clothing.

They found the child sitting on a bare, dirty mattress that appeared to have fleas, and officers reported the child was embarrassed by the conditions, couldn’t remember the last time she ate, and that the home had only minimal food.

While police were still inside, the child asked what would happen to the cats, then specifically mentioned cats in the freezer, leading officers to locate two deep freezers containing 24 dead cats/kittens in bags and boxes.

Outcome:

Platz was arrested and charged with 24 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, and as of December 2025 she was reported as still awaiting trial.

Williams later entered a negotiated guilty plea to one count of aggravated cruelty, received 36 months of probation (24 months supervised), and his deal included conditions like no pets; additional counts and drug-related charges tied to the incident were reported as nolle prossed under the plea agreement.

DHS removed the child from the home and placed her with an adult sibling, and the residence was declared uninhabitable.
