Hello, and welcome to this Axway SecureTransport How to video. Today, we will set the foundations for understanding the concept behind ST routes. It is an easy-to-use concept with a powerful and flexible mechanism to cover your flow configurations. Let's break down the key components. First, we have steps. These are the building blocks that perform specific actions like renaming files, changing line ending, or sending files to partners.

Each step has a clearly defined input and output. Think of them as specialized tools in your workflow toolbox. Next, we have routes. These are sequences of steps that work together. They’re executing a specific order. One step’s output becomes the next step’s input. This creates a seamless flow of data processing. Your files can follow different paths through the system. Some might need transformation before they're ready to send.

Others may go direct to your partner without modification. We organize these pathways into categories: route templates and composite routes. The route templates are like blueprints or recipes. They can be reused, inherited, or extended for different scenarios. Composite routes are where you apply a template to a specific account, essentially saying, “Account John will use this specific workflow template.” And now let's jump into a diagram view.

First, we start with the steps. That's a sequence of three steps. They can be part of a route. Then, we could have a single step that is part of a route. And those two routes are part of a route template. And the route template is inherited by a composite route, which could also have its own specific routes with another three steps.
