When the levator Ani is spasmed, patients often say, "I feel like...
...there's something stuck in my rectum."
...there's a golf ball in my rectum."
...when I sit, there's a ton of pressure."
...there's a lot of pressure in my rectum or vagina."
... there's pain in my scrotal and testicular area."
... it feels like I have a UTI."
...my tailbone hurts every time I sit."
... it's uncomfortable to drive in my car for long periods of time."
There are various reasons why the levator ani muscles can become spasmed. For example, orthopedic conditions like hip trauma, back issues, or surgery in that area can irritate the muscles and cause them to spasm. Stress is another reason why the pelvic floor muscles can tense up, just like any other muscle group in your body.
Sexual trauma can also cause a subconscious tightening of the pelvic floor musculature, and symptoms may show up later. Chronic inflammation from conditions like chronic constipation, IBS, Chrohn's disease, endometriosis, or chronic UTI or yeast infections can also irritate the tissue and eventually lead to a spasm in the levator ani muscles.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention. There are various treatments available, such as physical therapy, medications, and lifestyle changes, that can help alleviate your discomfort and pain. So, take care of your pelvic floor and seek help if you need it!
