This hymn was written by Edward Perronet (1721–1792). It was first printed anonymously in a four-page booklet in Canterbury in 1779. The most significant revision of the hymn was made only a few years after it was first written, by John Rippon (1751–1836) in A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors (1787). The first appearance of the hymn with music in the United States was by Oliver Holden (1765–1844). He published Rippon’s version of the first stanza with a tune of his own composition, in Union Harmony, vol. 1 (1793).

~Lyrics~
1. All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all!
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all!

2. Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all!
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all!

3. Let ev’ry kindred, ev’ry tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all!
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all!

4. O that with yonder sacred throng,
We at His feet may fall;
We’ll join the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all!
We’ll join the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all!
