IS CHICAGO READY TO REFORM EDUCATION?

Summary of Public Affairs’ Jeff Berkowitz’s October 14, 2024 conversation with Dr. Miquel Lewis, CPS 9th District Board Candidate
Miquel Lewis, who would bring decades of combined practical administrative, budget and educational experience dealing with adults, kids and real world governance and other education problems to the Chicago Public School (“CPS”) Board, emphasized during his discussion with show host Berkowitz the key issues facing the CPS Board:
1. CPS performance issues: how to fix Chicago’s inability to teach the vast majority of our students how to read and do math with proficiency.
2. How to get much more for all of Chicago’s parents, kids, taxpayers and other residents for the $30,000 per student per year that CPS is spending.
3. The vast majority of Chicago’s parents, K-12 students and other Chicago residents want parental control of where to send kids to school.
4. All Chicago students should be safe from the physical violence that often is present in and around our schools, as well as the anti-Semitism and bullying that has infected or is tolerated by significant portions of CTU Leadership and CPS’ administration and faculty.
