We have visited Bermuda on many occasions before we had children. It’s a great island that is easily accessible via public transportation, taxis, or rental scooters. Our kids’ first time on a cruise ship was on a cruise to Bermuda (more about that here). However, we’ve always dreamed about flying to Bermuda and spending an entire week on the instead instead of the three or four days you get to spend in Bermuda when on a cruise.

So this time when we were planning a visit to Bermuda we decided we wanted to fly in. People talk about how expensive Bermuda can be, which can be true, if you don’t do a little research. In reality, most things are not that much more expensive than in the United States (except for the price of gasoline!) Also, our children have various food allergies, so cruising has been typically been a safe option since our floating hotel with an allergy-friendly restaurant traveled with us (except for Carnival Cruise Lines). So between wanting to save some money on meals and making sure the kids would have safe options, we decided we needed to find accommodations with our own kitchen.

We researched a few hotels but quickly saw that even options without kitchens would be a few hundred dollars a night. So the next stops were vrbo.com and airbnb.com to search rentals on the island. Our dream list criteria included a rental that was walking distance to a supermarket, a bus stop, a beach, had a pool, and a view.

Finding a rental that met all those criteria sounded impossible, but ultimately we found the perfect rental for our needs on bermudarentals.com. The rental was located in the Southampton parish (Bermuda has nine “parishes”) and was situated at the top of a hill with amazing views of the Great Sound. It was a short walk to a major supermarket and a bus stop, less than 15-minute walk to Horseshoe Bay, right next to the Railway Trail, and we even had access to a private pool. And the cost was orders of magnitude less than a hotel with similar features (We paid $225 a night for the four of us). The rental was a “studio” that was attached to the main house on the property but had its own separate private entrance. The rental had a queen size bed, double-size sofa bed, full kitchen, and bathroom. We’d estimate the rental was about 600 square feet.
