Most Metroid fan projects typically fall short of reaching the finish line. This is one of the few that actually succeeded.

While the Metroid series slowly entered into a new renaissance with the release of Metroid Dread and the anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, one man was quietly chipping away at the reimagining of Metroid Fusion that Nintendo was unwilling to make. After spending 13 long years in development, his magnum opus was finally released to the public - not as a standalone fangame, but as a Super Metroid hack that pushed the limits of what could be done within the Super Metroid hacking scene.

This is a look at Super Metroid X-Fusion, an ambitious reinterpretation of the GBA original that features new bosses, new areas, and a revamped story. It's a rare example of a Metroid fan project actually crossing the finish line - but not exactly with perfect form.
