News8 features a Sheriff's Department Start Smart class in Poway.
Nearly 400 students and their parents listened as two speakers shared their heartbreaking stories of losing a loved one to DUI.

Erin Limonchi lost her mother to a teen drunk driver who was also high on drugs in Santee in 2009. Cindi Aguirre also spoke and urged teens not to drink and drive and text like her daughter Veronica who was killed in a rollover crash in Escondido in December 2009.

Both speakers also asked parents to check on their children and to know what they're doing.

Deputy Todd Murphy from the Poway Sheriff's Station showed graphic video of crashes at Poway intersections captured by red light cameras. Parents and students gasped in disbelief at some of the images.

The Sheriff's Department is dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries on the roads. Since June 2010, free Start Smart classes have been regularly offered to new drivers and their parents/guardians so they clearly understand their responsibilities when a teen starts to drive. A wrecked SUV from a deadly DUI crash is on display to emphasize the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. The class also clarifies the restrictions of a provisional license and social host rules in the county.
