Here is a video where you can clearly see how a container ship is loaded. The automated vehicles take the containers to the crane, which places them on the ship. Before the containers go on board, twistlocks are placed and then they are stacked on the container ship. When the container is put in place, the twistlocks lock automatically. In this case the bottom 2 rows of containers are secured to the deck with metal rods, so that the cargo remains stable even at sea. Placing the metal rods is heavy work and is still done by hand.
