Gyrodyne Xron helicopter with a 17ft rotor diameter with a 55hp solar gas turbine engine custom manufactured by solar in the 1950's specifically for Gyrodyne to fulfill US Marine Corp contract.

They were two flight articles produced; this particular aircraft was serial number 2.
The difference in this aircraft is the reduction in weight by replacing the 356 Porsche engine with the solar engine, which reduced the weight of the aircraft by 100lbs.
As you can see in the video clip how agile and responsive the controls of the helicopter are compared to a Porsche engine configuration.
The main advantage of the Gyrodyne coaxial helicopter is that we do not use differential collective for yaw control - all versions of the helicopter use a tip brake control design which was originally designed by Bendix Helicopter. Gyrodyne improved the design and incorporated it in all the product lines. That was a major achievement in the 1960's.
