A short film on the inspiring journey of Water Cup 2019, narrated by Postman Kaka from 'Chala Hawa Yeu Dya'.

This summer, the villages were struck by a calamity. Last year, it was as if the rain gods had turned their backs on Maharashtra. People and animals were in despair, yearning for water. Entire villages were forced to migrate in search of employment. And words fall short to describe the state of the children and elderly left behind. Despite this situation, an incredible sight was seen this year.

On the evening of April 7, grand preparations were on in Maharashtra’s villages. Torches were lit, shovels and pickaxes raised. People had started coming together. And as the clock struck midnight, an air of festivity gripped the whole state.

Defeating the darkness, people set out on torch-lit rallies. Hoards of people gathered in the fields, to resounding drum beats. Exactly at 12 am, the villagers flagged off a battle. With the strength of their own two hands, these warriors resolved to defeat drought. And as this madness grew, a storm of change gripped the entire state. With the rising sun, lakhs of villagers in thousands of villages stepped out, with a single resolve and dream… defeating drought.

From children to the elderly, youth, men and women - everyone was consumed by this work. The government machinery was also infusing its strength into this work.

Without blaming fate or anyone else, the villagers set out to forge their own future. City dwellers too, joined shramadaan efforts. Together, Jalmitras raised a whopping sum of Rs. 3 crore 32 lakh towards villages fighting drought. Villages thus received over 30,000 hours of machine support.

The entire world was witness to these 50 days. As the 50 days drew to a close, there was a transformation in the villages.Miles and miles of watershed structures were built. Over 4,000 km of CCTs and deep CCTs were built this year. Over 5,500 km of compartment bunding was created. If we combine this with previous years' figures, then until today, approx. 11,000 km of CCTs and deep CCTs, and approx. 15,000 km of compartment bunding have been built.

This outstanding work has led to the creation of 23,213 crore litres of water storage capacity. Just imagine. Work at such a massive scale, achieved by human strength. If this water were to be filled in 10,000-litre water tankers, 2,32,12,821 tankers would be required! Assuming one tanker costs Rs. 2,000, the price of this water will be Rs. 4,642 crore and 65 lakh.

This year, every village is determined to respect the gift of water, and use it carefully. May this undying spirit only reach farther!
