Hello, I am Mrs Manju Jha, practicing yoga for the last 20 years.


Today I would like to share with you a very beneficial breathing exercise called 'Pawanmuktasana'. It is the first series of pranayama exercises that are included in Yoga. Pawan means air or wind and Mukta is the release. So 'Pawanmuktasana' is the exercise that releases air out of our body through certain pressure techniques involving different body parts.

The benefits of this asana are that it heals almost all kinds of diseases. It strengthens our lungs, respiratory system, and digestive system. The very first step in Pawanmuktasana is to do a neck lock. Place the right palm on your chin and place it below your lower lip. Now, block that little gap between your upper and lower teeth by applying a little bit of pressure with your thumb. Breathe in slowly with complete focus on your neck muscles.

In the Pawanmuktasana series, you have to do the neck lock with every single asana. Be aware that if you feel any sort of discomfort or pain, remove the pressure immediately. Pawanmuktasana series includes 12 asanas (postures) ending with Shavasana (corpse pose).
