India’s Supreme Court has ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi and nearby areas be captured and sent to permanent shelters.
This should be done within eight weeks.
Why did they order this ? Let me explain.
Last week a small kid was running out of the home.
The street dogs surrounded and attacked him and he died.
This made the court discuss this topic.
The decision comes after rising cases of dog bites in New Delhi, including several fatal incidents involving children.
The Delhi court said nearly 2,000 dog bite cases daily.
In the world, India is facing 36% of rabies deaths.
The court said children should not live in fear of being bitten and that action must be taken to protect them.
But animal rights groups have reacted with outrage, calling the decision impractical and dangerous.
Red Paws Rescue, a New Delhi-based NGO, said the order is like a death sentence for community dogs.
Maneka Gandhi, former minister, said the judgment seemed like one made in anger.
Because how shelters would be built and maintained in such a short time.
She asked who would feed and care for the dog ?
Placing 5,000 dogs in one shelter would lead to disaster.
She said infections would spread, dogs would fight due to lack of resources, and unsterilized dogs could reproduce.

Protests erupted in Delhi and Hyderabad, and around 40 to 50 protesters were detained by police near India Gate.
