Congenital Bowing Disorders
Congenital bowing disorders are conditions present at birth where the long bones of the limbs (most often the tibia or femur) show abnormal curvature. These deformities can range from mild cosmetic issues to severe structural problems that impair walking and growth.

Common Types
Congenital Tibial Bowing

Bowing of the tibia (shin bone) seen at birth.

Can be anterolateral (forward and outward) or posteromedial (backward and inward).

Severe cases may progress to congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (non-healing fracture).

Congenital Femoral Bowing

Curvature of the femur (thigh bone).

May be associated with limb length discrepancy.

Fibular Hemimelia

Partial or complete absence of the fibula.

Causes bowing of the tibia and ankle instability.

Congenital Bowing in Skeletal Dysplasias

Seen in conditions like osteogenesis imperfecta (fragile bones) or achondroplasia (short-limbed dwarfism).

Bowing results from abnormal bone growth and structure.

Clinical Features
Visible curvature of the limb at birth.

Limb length discrepancy.

Possible associated deformities (clubfoot, hip dysplasia).

Risk of fracture or pseudarthrosis in severe tibial bowing.

Diagnosis
Clinical examination: Observation of limb shape and function.

Imaging: X-rays to assess bone curvature, integrity, and growth plate involvement.

Genetic evaluation: If associated with syndromes or skeletal dysplasias.

Management
Observation: Mild cases may improve with growth.

Orthotics/Bracing: To support alignment and prevent worsening.

Surgery:

Osteotomy (cutting and realigning bone).

External fixators (Ilizarov method) for gradual correction and lengthening.

Bone grafting in pseudarthrosis.
