The Ayawaso East NDC parliamentary primary has thrust Baba Jamal into the centre of a national conversation on vote-buying, political values, and the future of Ghana’s democracy.

Political analyst and CenCES CEO, Dr James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, argues the controversy exposes a deeper crisis of voter entitlement and material-driven politics. He warns that values and principles are being sacrificed for personalities and money, criticising what he describes as rushed and poorly coordinated responses from the presidency, party headquarters, and the NDC caucus in Parliament. According to him, fighting wrongdoing the wrong way only deepens the chaos, and party financing must be confronted honestly.

Defending the presidency’s actions, Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, says the President had a responsibility to take remedial steps to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations. He insists the committee’s work will go beyond candidates to include receivers of alleged inducements, stressing that decisive action is necessary to prevent the party from falling into disrepute and to uphold the principles of the reset agenda.

Corporate lawyer and entrepreneur Victoria Bright describes voter inducement as a growing business model that is steadily weakening democracy, sometimes rendering the voter irrelevant. She supports the establishment of an investigative committee but calls for a renewed focus on meritocracy in Ghana’s democratic process.

Legal scholar and energy expert Lom Nuku Ahlijah dismisses claims of confusion among the presidency, the NDC, and Parliament, suggesting that expanding the electoral college in party elections could significantly curb vote-buying.

From the opposition’s perspective, Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Organiser, condemns the open display of alleged inducement, calling it disgraceful. He questions why Baba Jamal appears to be singled out and urges a broader national conversation to stop what he describes as the creeping rise of “moneytocracy” in Ghanaian politics.
