Are there castes in the Muslim community like the Hindu community? In elections, parties often focus on Hindu castes, which are further divided into general SC, ST and OBC, but most people consider the Muslim community as one caste, but there are 3 types of castes among Muslims too. One is Ashraf, the second is Ajlaaf and the third is Arzal. The Ashraf are self-proclaimed descendants of Muslim immigrants who came to the Indian subcontinent from the Middle East and Central Asia. This group includes Sayyid, Sheikh, Mughal and Pathan, this is the general category of Muslims. Ajlaf, Arzal are mainly Hindus who converted to Islam and are called OBC and Dalit respectively. Since the 1990s, activists from non-Ashraf Muslims—Ajlaf (OBC) and Arzal (Dalit) Muslims—sought to mobilize against Ashraf dominance in politics. And now they call themselves Pasmanda Muslims! Pasmanda is a Persian word meaning "people left behind"!
