He'd served as French president for more than a decade, an icon of the country's ruling establishment, a savvy diplomat who operated in the circle of the world's most powerful leaders.
Now a court has found Jacques Chirac guilty of embezzling public funds to illegally finance his conservative party, back when he was mayor of Paris.
The former leader, now 79 years old, didn't take part in the trial, after doctors determined that he suffers from severe memory lapses.
But his adopted daughter Anh Dao Traxel was on hand to hear that he won't have to serve time behind bars, he'll get a two-year suspended sentence that will go on his criminal record.

The prosecutor had requested acquittal, saying there wasn't enough evidence. But the court disagreed, as did anti-corruption group Anticor...

Whatever impact the decision has on Chirac's image, the latest baring of the underworld of French cronyism could affect voters as they cast ballots in elections next year.
