Poindexter Village was dedicated on October 12, 1940 as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. Named for Rev. James Preston Poindexter – a clergyman, abolitionist, politician and civil rights activist in Columbus – Poindexter Village was the second community housing development in the nation.

Over the years, Poindexter Village was home to countless people who went on to become influential artists, social activists, athletes, and political and national leaders. However, in 2013, all but 10 of the original townhouses were demolished. Today, only two of the original buildings stand.

On April 21, 2021, the Ohio Senate passed a bill, introduced by state Senator Hearcel F. Craig, to designate Poindexter Village as a state historical site. In collaboration with the James Preston Poindexter Foundation and the Ohio History Connection, Senator Craig hopes this bill "will preserve a vibrant and important piece of Ohio history, one that captures the essence of what the Black community was like in the 1940s and 1950s."
