On July 4th, I got up to an alarming sight. One of the caterpillars released a bunch of gooey black liquid. I thought it might be ready to pupate and put it in a jar with dirt in it. It buried under the dirt, but when I dumped the jar it had not pupated, although the second one had. I put the first caterpillar on the surface of the soil and continue to remain hopeful of its pupation as the days passed. But after 2 weeks, it has become obvious that the caterpillar died. It has become dry and hard and shriveled up. I'm sad that the one died because I got two of them only in hope that they would become one male and one female. I didn't really know if that is how it would be or if it would be 2 males or 2 females. But it's still good to have ONE healthy pupa, at least it's better than NOTHING! I hope this pupa hatches into a beautiful healthy oakworm moth soon!
