In the realm of electronic sounds, few topics ignite as much passion and disagreement as the distinction between "EDM" and "Electronic Music." This video dives into that controversial nomenclature debate and explores its impact on Christian music.
What is Electronic Music (EM)? Electronic Music is the broadest term, acting as a massive umbrella encompassing any music created using electronic equipment or software, such as Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Technically, this definition is so wide that much of modern pop, rock, and rap could be considered Electronic Music. Electronic Music includes non-dance genres such as ambient, downtempo, chill out, IDM (intelligent dance music), industrial, and synthpop.
What is EDM (Electronic Dance Music)? Literally, EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music. The generally accepted rule is: All EDM is Electronic Music, but not all Electronic Music is EDM. If music is not danceable—such as ambient electronic music—it is simply Electronic Music, not EDM.
The Core Debate: Connotation and Stigma While EDM can be used casually as a general term for all electronic dance genres (including house, techno, and trance), for many long-time listeners and purists, the term carries specific and often negative connotations.
The term EDM originated in the United States, often seen as a conscious marketing attempt by American corporations and major labels to categorize and profit from the genre. This led to EDM being narrowly associated with:
• Commercialism and Pop: It is frequently linked to "cheesy" pop radio music and is seen as the genre's commercial side.
• Festival Music: It evokes a sound that is homogenized and friendly to massive American festivals (like EDC). This sound often shares a similar structure leading to a heavy bass drop or "big room" drop.
• Specific Artists: It is most commonly associated with mainstream acts like David Guetta, Marshmello, Avicii, and Swedish House Mafia.
For purists, calling techno or deep house "EDM" is considered cringe, often equating Aphex Twin with David Guetta—a comparison considered fundamentally wrong due to the vast differences in sound and intent. Using the term can imply that the music lacks subtlety and is "commercial corporate content".
