백령(白翎)이라면 흰 새의 날개를 뜻한다. 예로부터 백령도는 철새의 보금자리로서 한때는 수백만 마리에 이르는 두루미가 깃들였다고 한다. 이 섬의 고구려 때 이름은 ‘곡도(鵠島)’로서, 곡(鵠)은 고니〔白鳥〕나 따오기를 가리키는 한자말이다. 흔히 ‘곡곡(鵠鵠)’이라면 백조의 울음소리를 형용한 말이고, 곡립(鵠立)이라면 백조처럼 목을 길게 빼고 서 있는 모습을, 곡망(鵠望)이라면 무언가 학수고대하는 모습을 일컫는 말이다. 말하자면 백조의 고향인 이 섬을 백령이라 이름한 것이다.
백령도가 온통 흰 새로 뒤덮였을 때의 이야기다. 백령도에서 얼마 떨어지지 않은 황해도의 어느 마을에 가난한 선비가 살았다. 그는 우연한 기회에 고을 원님의 고명딸을 알게 되고 두 사람은 사랑하는 사이가 되었다. 그러나 문제는 원님 집에서 이 선비를 완강히 거부한다는 점이었다. 아무리 설득해도 원님은 요지부동, 선비를 사위로 인정할 수 없다고 했다. 두 사람 사이는 파탄에 이르게 되었다. 둘 사이를 떼놓을 수 없음을 안 원님이 딸을 외딴 섬으로 쫓아버린 것이다.
얼마 동안 갈라 놓으면 곧 잊혀지려니 했던 것인데 그게 그렇지가 않았다. 선비는 전보다 더 처녀를 갈구했다. 갈망도 지극하면 기적이 생기는 법인가, 하루는 한 마리의 백조가 날아와 날갯죽지에서 흰 종이를 떨구고 가는 꿈을 꾸게 된다. 흰 날개를 가진 백조가 암시하는 바는 무엇인가?
그것은 바로 백령(白翎)의 섬, 잠에서 깨어난 선비는 이내 장산곶에서 배를 얻어 타고 백조의 섬으로 달려간다. 백조의 흰 날개로 뒤덮힌 백령도에는 과연 선비를 기다리는 처녀가 있었다. 두 사람의 포옹은 떨어질 줄 몰랐으니, 백로의 보금자리가 이들 연인의 안식처로 변하게 되었다. 사랑하는 청춘남녀가 죽음으로 끝나는 서양의 로미오와 줄리엣과는 달리 우리의 러브 스토리는 이처럼 해피엔딩으로 막을 내린다. 백령도에서 해후한 이들은 평생 이 섬에서 흰 새들과 함께, 그야말로 백년해로했다는 이야기다.

In other words, this island, the home of swans, was named Baekryeong. This is a story about when Baekryeong Island was covered in white birds. A poor scholar lived in a village in Hwanghae Province not far from Baekryeong Island. By chance, he met the famous daughter of the local magistrate, and the two fell in love. However, the problem was that the lord’s family stubbornly rejected the scholar. No matter how much he tried to persuade him, the lord stubbornly refused to accept the scholar as his son-in-law. The relationship between the two ended in ruin. The lord, knowing that they could not be separated, banished his daughter to a remote island.
He thought that if they separated for a while, they would soon forget each other, but that was not the case. The lord longed for the girl even more than before. When longing is intense, miracles happen, and one day, he had a dream in which a swan flew in and dropped a white piece of paper from its wing. What did the swan with white wings imply?
It was none other than Baekryeong Island. The lord, who woke up from his sleep, got on a boat at Jangsan Cape and ran to Baekryeong Island. On Baekryeong Island, covered with white swan wings, there was indeed a girl waiting for the lord. The two of them never let go of their embrace, and the egret’s nest became a sanctuary for these lovers. Unlike Romeo and Juliet in the West, where the young man and woman in love end in death, our love story ends with a happy ending. The story goes that those who reunited on Baekryeong Island spent their entire lives together on the island with white birds, literally living together for a hundred years.
