Hugh Joseph Feely - Western Island

When I first heard this song, Western Island, I immediately thought of my grandfather.
The song tells a story of a man who has come to settle on the land and build a life out for himself from the land. Which is exactly what my grandfather done in the west of Ireland.

It's short and sweet but almost perfect in my opinion. Written by the great Archie Fisher, a Scottish folk singer, back in the 1970s.

I chose to record this in my grandfather homeland, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim by the stunning Lough Melvin. His house lies carved into the hill in the background hidden amongst the trees.

You can see me looking anxiously at the camera during this one, some of the cattle in the filed got a bit too up close and personal and nearly started licking the tripod. I guess curiouity got the better of them.
