Correct Posture While Tuning

Piano tuning is actually incredibly demanding on your body. You’re making hundreds if not thousands of small minute movements with your body to alter the tuning pins. So having the correct posture and the right stance is imperative so that you can have a long successful career as a piano tuner.

We actually train all of our technicians to stand when they tune an upright piano to keep that correct posture. This way, you are standing straight and you’re not hunched over. Having a standing position allows you to get in close to the piano tuning pins which allows you to have better control and better movement of the pins. It also puts less strain on your shoulders allows you to be just right where you need to be.

On a grand piano having good posture is just as important on a upright piano. Most technicians like to sit when tuning a grand and that is recommended. This way you can get in close to the piano and have better access to those tuning pins. One of the things that is nice about a grand piano is the fact that it has this built in armrest (called the stretcher) to rest your arm on. The stretcher allows you to have better tuning hammer control and it also takes the weight off your shoulder which will allows you to tune a lot longer and with a lot more ease.

Whether you’re tuning a ground or an upright piano the correct posture is so important. Keep your back straight, your shoulders square and keep from hunching over as much as possible.
