Block of The Month 2023: Block #11
This month’s block is called a Log Cabin Fan. Our 2023 focus fabric is from Hoffman and is called Paint Impressions. This month in addition to the focus fabric and a white fabric, you need two additional coordinating fabrics based on the colors in the focus fabric. Remember, all our blocks end up 12.5" X 12.5" (a 12" finished block.)
Cut list -- For one block
White: one - 3.75" square;
two - 7" square (cut these two on one diagonal);
Focus Fabric: one each - 2.25" X 3.75" & 2.25" X 5.5" rectangles
Coordinating fabric 1: one each - 2.25" X 5.5" & 2.25" X 7.25" rectangles
Coordinating fabric 2: one each - 2.25" X 7.25"; 2.25" X 9" rectangles

Assembling the block: Use an accurate quarter inch seam. First, we will assemble the block center. This part is done in the way we made the April block – Half Log Cabin.
• Step one: join white 3.75" square with focus fabric 2.25" X 3.75" rectangle. Press to the darker fabric. Add focus fabric 2.25" " X 5.5" rectangle to an adjacent side and press to the newly added fabric. Repeat these steps with correct size pieces in the following order: coordinating fabric 1, then coordinating fabric 2. Always add new fabric to the fabric added in the prior round. If your pieces don’t fit – check your seam allowance and that you have the correct fabric for the round.When all rounds have been added, fold the square in half and press the a fold in the center in both directions.
• Make corner square triangles: Cut each of the white 7" squares on one diagonal so you end up with four triangles. With each of these triangles, fold the triangle hypotenuse in half and press to mark the center of the triangle.
• Next, position the square you have made in front of you. You will use the pressed center marks to line up the triangles in the middle of each side. Sew a triangle to two opposite sides and press to the triangles. Trim off the little points that stick out in the corners. Now, add the other two triangles in the way to the other two sides.
• The triangles we added are slightly oversized, so you will need to square up the block with a 12½" X 12½" square up ruler. Make sure to leave a ¼" of fabric beyond the points of your coordinating fabric 2.
