[SKY BETA] Cat Hairstyle is now free? 😺 | Day's of Mischief

TGC Beta update notes ~ 03:10 am Today

Last week, when 0.19.0 beta testing began, the first build showed the Days of Mischief cat ear hairstyle as an IGC item, and the cat mask in an IAP bundle. The second build a day later swapped the hairstyle to IAP and the mask to IGC, and changed the mask’s appearance. This sparked a lot of anger, so as the week starts, we'd like to talk with you all about what happened and why. (This is split into two posts because of character limits.)

Before testing began, we went back and forth on a couple points regarding the hairstyle and mask: Which would be available for IGC, and which should feature the cat ears? We make sure that items released during an event or Season all work well together—having ears on both would have made them jumbled and redundant when worn together. To explore both ideas, we made 3D models of each for review.

The mask turned out to create significant, messy clipping problems with hairstyles that are popular with players, which we know from feedback is something players don’t like. We then updated the mask to avoid these issues, and within the same time frame, eventually settled on including the hairstyle in the IAP bundle, and offering the mask for IGC. Unfortunately, those changes were not included in the first beta build.

Because the decisions about the cat hair and cat mask were settled and implemented after the deadline for the first build, those changes were put into the second build, created before any testing for 0.19.0 began. In the meantime, other teams involved with the beta program did not immediately find out about the new plans for those items—this is why I unknowingly posted update notes that were wrong.

As testers are aware, beta content changes frequently because it’s in development, and isn’t final until it’s in the live version. *But we know that this change was especially stressful and frustrating for you all, and we’re sorry for the experience this gave you.* Folks were excited and hopeful about the first version of the cat hair and thought it was a good deal, then found out the next day that we changed it to require money. The decisions we made before public testing began made a lot of people feel like we were intentionally taking away the cat hairstyle because people liked it, even though that wasn’t at all the case. Both players and developers in Sky genuinely strive for our shared community to be compassionate and generous, and the last thing we want is to make you feel like we tried to take something away from you.

We hear the pain these changes caused, and though we can’t undo how the beta updates went out last week, these are some changes we’ll make going forward:

Switch the items to the way they were in the first build: cat hair as an IGC item, cat mask as part of an IAP bundle.

In the spirit of wishing everyone a happy Days of Mischief, we’ll further reduce the cost of the cat hair from 66 candles to 44 candles. (It can take up to several days for updates to be made and pass internal testing, though, so changes 1 and 2 may not appear in the next build.)

We’ll work on the IAP bundle pack over time, focusing on the appearance of the cape.

While beta content will always be unfinished and subject to change, we will also improve our internal processes so that testers have a better idea of what to expect in the testing phase. Although the very nature of beta testing means that update posts in this channel can’t be 100% accurate 100% of the time, we do want to prevent an experience like this one from happening in the future.


Please note, too, all Days of Mischief items are still a WIP, so while we still want to make sure items from a single event match well together and don’t create bad clipping problems, we still definitely welcome feedback as we work to make them better during beta testing!
