There has been a tendency in India to look to the west and to try and imitate western modes of living. There has been a widespread adoption of western architectural styles that have been copied and pasted across its landscape, forgetting the value the indigenous building practices bring. It is important to move towards sustainable vernacularism which has roots in India's rich architectural heritage, instead of blindly following the western model.
Dr Benny Kuriakose is the founder of Benny Kuriakose & Associates, an architectural and conservation consultancy firm.
His deep knowledge and love for vernacular architecture and craftsmanship guide his design process. He teaches and passes on his knowledge to the next generations of architects and designers. He loves to travel, has visited more than 40 countries, and collects antiques in his spare time. Benny Kuriakose was born in Kerala, India. He made his mark in architectural conservation and the design of new buildings, taking his roots from the vernacular architecture of South India. He is known for designing structures which are built from natural materials such as timber, stone and brick This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
