Human cells have a survival mechanism in place & they leave no stone unturned to make sure they survive & grow.

However to prevent uncontrolled growth, our integrative system biology approach makes sure that growth is kept in check. The key factor that plays a role in striking cellular homeostasis is Mitochondria which regulates cellular metabolism, cellular growth & death ( apoptosis).

It is no brainer Mitochondria, having its own DNA, is the energy powerhouse of the cells & provides ATP( energy currency) via TCA cycle & oxidative phosphorylation. It provides us energy in the time of need- be it stress, energy needs or lack of nutrients. Mitochondria oxidative metabolism involves a process where the food we eat is converted into energy & as a result reactive oxidative species but to counter it, mitochondria also produce antioxidants

Mitochondria biogenesis also plays a key in healthier ageing & longevity.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is connected with virtually every single chronic disease & even CANCER.

There are multiple factors that could render mitochondrial dysfunctional which includes improper nutrition choices- consumption of sugar, seed oils, vegetable oils, ultra processed foods, nutrition not aligned with our unique biology, gut/oral microbial dysbiosis, functional loss of nitric oxide production & more.

Mitochondria dysfunction leads to overproduction of ROS which damages protein, lipids, nucleic acid & causes changes in expression/ mutation of certain genes which has a downstream effect of causing cancer.

Mitochondrial dysfunction results in uncontrolled growth of cells, even making them cancerous. These cancer cells resort to fermentation pathways for their survival, proliferation & uncontrolled growth. Fuel for these fermentation pathways are glucose & glutamine. Mitochondrial dysfunction driven activation of fermentation pathways leads to growth of cancer cells, metastasis & finally low survival rate. Understanding the underlying cause of mitochondrial dysfunction & mechanism behind activation of fermentation pathways is key to prevent /stop progression of cancer.
