A lethal arsenal of Mr. Hockey finalists and Division I recruits defeated Duluth East 4-1 in front of a championship-game record 19,495 fans at the Xcel Energy Center. Ryan Poehling’s blast from between the circles gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first period. He received a pass from brother Nick and wasted little time unloading a heavy shot past the Duluth East goalie. In the 2nd period, Lakeville North extended its lead to 2-0 on a long-range goal by Jack Poehling, capping a patient power-play sequence of precision passing before firing a shot from just inside the blue line. Senior defenseman Angelo Altavilla gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead at 4:26 of the third period, one timing a blast from the slot into a wide-open goal. The Panthers first state championship came with a 31-0 record (the most wins by any state champion ever), becoming the state’s first big-school team to run the table unscathed since Bloomington Jefferson in 1992-93.
