If you end up pleading guilty or found guilty of a felony but that felony is a wobbler, if the person receives probation and doesn't go to prison that person qualifies for a 17b. A 17b, the California penal code is basically, has a felony reduced to a misdemeanor. The main benefit is having a misdemeanor on your record and no longer a felony on your record. And asked on an application, "Do you have anything on your criminal record?" You can say you've been convicted of a misdemeanor and not a felony.

Primarily it's done for your record, getting it reduced so you can find better jobs, application for employment and of course, licensing issues. They may not issue a license to realtor or to a doctor or anyone if it's a felony. If it's reduced to misdemeanor, then they might.

Also, misdemeanors are important getting it reduced because if people are charged and convicted of a sex crime. If that sex crime gets reduced to a misdemeanor that person may be eligible for a certificate of rehabilitation and that could stop registration. If it stays a felony then you got to get a governor to pardon you, which is much more difficult. There are reasons why you want it to get reduced down to a misdemeanor to help you with jobs or perhaps stopping to register as a sex offender.
