🧮 How to Compare Integers

Integers on a number line are arranged from left to right.

The numbers increase as we move right.

The numbers decrease as we move left.

Rule:

Any number to the right of another number on the number line is greater.

Any number to the left is smaller.

Examples:

+5 is greater than +2 because +5 is to the right of +2.

–3 is lesser than +2 because –3 is to the left of +2.

–7 is lesser than –4 because –7 is to the left of –4.

🔢 How to Order Integers

To order integers, arrange them from smallest to greatest (ascending) or greatest to smallest (descending).

Use the number line to visualize their positions.

Remember that:

Negative numbers are always less than zero.

Among negative numbers, the one with smaller absolute value is greater.

Examples:

Arrange –3, +4, 0, –1 in ascending order:
→ –3, –1, 0, +4

Arrange –2, +3, –5, 0 in descending order:
→ +3, 0, –2, –5

⚖️ What are Opposite Integers?

Two integers are opposites if they are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of the number line.

Their sum is always zero.

Examples:

+4 and –4 are opposites because they are 4 units away from 0.

+7 and –7 are opposites.

0 is its own opposite.

Rule:

Opposite of (+a) = –a
Opposite of (–a) = +a

❤️ What is the Absolute Value of an Integer?

The absolute value of an integer means its distance from zero on the number line, without considering the sign.

It is always positive or zero.

Notation:
|a| represents the absolute value of a.

Examples:

|+5| = 5

|–5| = 5

|0| = 0

Tip to Remember:

Absolute value means “forget the sign and take the number.”
