The Epoch Times recently obtained a classified document of the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP classified document, officially called the “Military-civilian integration equipment pre-research and industrialization demonstration project proposal” in 2017, discloses one of the military-civilian co-op projects for weapons called the “new vector nozzle.”

On most aircraft, a nozzle located at the rear of a jet engine directs the flow of hot exhaust gases out of the engine and afterburner. This nozzle is fixed and points straight out of the engine. But a vectoring nozzle can change direction, controlled by the pilot, and thereby makes the fighter jet or missile much more maneuverable. This explains why America’s F-15 and F-22 fighter jets use vectoring nozzles. Such nozzles play an important part in their vertical take-off and landing, flexible steering without slowing down, and stealth capabilities.

The project entails developing new functional engineering and gradient materials, coupled with 3D integral molding technology, to manufacture functional composite vector nozzles for military and aerospace production to meet stealth requirements. Such materials can also produce high temperature resistant ablative protective bodies, composite armor, and so on to promote the precision strike of combat weapons and missiles, and develop rockets.

Back during the Zhuhai Air Show in November 2018, the Chinese Communist Party’s Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) displayed the vector nozzle fighter for the first time, and announced the technical information of the omnidirectional vector nozzle for the improved fourth-generation fighter J-10. It has been tested for axisymmetric vector nozzles and binary vector nozzles.

The CCP classified document also states that the use of gradient material nozzles can greatly reduce the cost of the rocket and reduce the structural weight by 50%.

As it clarifies the war value of the project, “Flexible and dynamic Flight Management System (FMS) equipment can have remote manufacturing terminals, which can be produced simultaneously with the parent factory under battlefield conditions.”

Project Timeline

The classified document states the nozzle has “entered the production preparation stage of functional basic materials.” Furthermore, the smart nozzle prototype process design plan and preliminary experiments “have been completed,” with The manufacturing system led by Nanyang Hongyang Yuanda Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. of the West Henan Industrial Group having “basically formed and taking shape." West Henan is a subsidiary of China North Industries Group Corporation Limited or Norinco, a state-owned defense corporation.

The document also lists the production plan:
from June to September 2017, organize the industry-university-research integrated team
from October to December 2017, complete the investment and financing of enterprise construction, and fully enter the research and development and production preparation:
from April to July 2018, conduct secondary development of laboratory samples and other preparations;
from August to December 2018, organize the production system for the new lightweight vector nozzle industry project.

Although the “new lightweight vector nozzle” project should have been completed by the end of 2018, we haven’t obtained any confirmation.
