Viral messages claiming that ₹500 currency notes will be stopped from March and will no longer be available in ATMs have created widespread confusion across the country. The Government of India has now issued a clear clarification, dismissing these claims as fake news.

According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check team, there is no plan to discontinue or demonetise ₹500 notes. The PIB took to social media platform X to clarify that ₹500 notes will continue to remain legal tender, and people should not fall prey to misleading forwards and viral videos. The government has urged citizens to rely only on official sources for financial information.

Officials also clarified that ATM cash management decisions are based on logistical and operational requirements, not demonetisation. Temporary non-availability of certain denominations in ATMs does not mean the note is being withdrawn. The ₹500 note remains one of the most widely used denominations in daily transactions.
