Valarie Allman’s Next Quest For Gold: 2023 World Athletics Championships

Valarie Allman is the greatest discus thrower in American history. In 2021, the University of Texas volunteer assistant coach became the first American woman to win gold in the event since 2008. Just before torrential rain disrupted the competition, she notched a 68.98-meter opening throw that would hold on for the victory.

In 2022, she carried that success by recording the farthest throw in the world in nearly 30 years (71.46m at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla in April) and lost only one Diamond League meet before taking bronze at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Despite it being her first world championship medal, she was disappointed.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, she is once again looking to make history for herself but also for the United States. No American woman has ever won gold in the discus at Worlds. She heads into the competition with the farthest throw in the world (70.25m) and seven victories in nine competitions.

We paid her a visit in Austin, Texas to see how she was repairing and what it takes to be the best in the world. Her coach, Zebulon Sion, was quick to call it one of her best practices of the year.

The women’s discus qualification round will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20. The final will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 8:20 p.m. Budapest local time.
