Why does the UK have more preserved railway lines and steam locomotives than anywhere else in the World?

This video presents a short history of the events that led to the rail preservation boom - from British Rail’s modernisation plan which saw the end of steam traction, Dr Beeching’s cuts to loss making parts of the railway network and Dai Woodham, who became one of the best loved figures in the railway world after many locomotives were saved from the cutters torch at Barry Scrapyard.

We will see pictures of engines in their forlorn, abandoned state at Barry and film of them running in the present day.

There is also the chance to own part of a Barry locomotive for yourself!
