“The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance” is a ghost story by British author M.R. James.
The tale unfolds through four letters written by the narrator, identified only as W.R., to his brother Robert. The events occur in the early 19th century, specifically between December 22 and December 26, 1837.
W.R. receives a letter informing him that his Uncle Henry, a clergyman and church rector, has mysteriously disappeared.
Mrs. Hunt, Uncle Henry’s housekeeper, urges W.R. to join the search for the missing rector.
Most people believe Uncle Henry is dead, and W.R. eventually accepts this grim possibility.
Although respected, Uncle Henry could have been better liked. He worked hard and contributed to charity, but his stern demeanour and strict discipline made him less friendly.
Notably, he was one of the few clergymen in England who still wore traditional white neckties called bands.
After hearing about an excellent puppet performance from a travelling salesman, W.R. has a vivid and unsettling nightmare.
In the dream, he witnesses a horrific puppet show where a vengeful ghostly clergyman takes revenge on one of the puppets.
Interestingly, this is the only one of M.R. James’s published ghost stories where some action occurs on Christmas Day.

Story narrated by Chris Halton.
