Aztecs Rock Hunger (ARH) is an annual university-wide campaign led by Associated Students (A.S.) at San Diego State University (SDSU) with the goal of raising as much food as possible for the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank. It began a decade ago when the Food Bank organized a competition between San Diego universities called Colleges Rock Hunger. This competition led to the creation of Aztecs Rock Hunger, which has become one of the largest college food drives in the CSU system.

Since ARH’s inception, SDSU has raised over 3.3 million pounds of food for the Food Bank and 601,607 was raised in the 2019 campaign. We strive to do more and raise more to fight food insecurity in our community. With 15% of San Diegans facing this reality, including 164,000 children, SDSU and Associated Students strives to serve the hunger needs of our San Diego community.

As part of ARH, 20% of the monetary donations are donated directly to the Economic Crisis and Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT is a university program that assists students who are facing crises such as housing or food insecurity. During spring 2020, ECRT was able to provide over $12,000 in the form of grocery gift cards to students who were financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

Additionally, the food collected through ARH provides the food, including fresh produce given at the A.S. Food Pantry. Our on-campus food pantry is available twice a week during the academic year and provides additional resources and education on other programs that fight against food insecurity. During the 2019-20 academic school year, we were able to distribute over 91,000 pounds of food to students in need.
