Mount Makiling, named after Diwata Mariang Makiling, is a mountain range just south of the largest freshwater lake in the Philippine archipelago, Laguna de Bay. Makiling belongs to the provinces of Laguna and Batangas in Luzon, the northernmost island of the archipegalo.

While billions of years precede Makiling's humanly-perceptible herstory in the anthropocene, this series will begin with what can be perceived through the "public archive". We will then immerse into the "esoteric archive".

I understand the public archive as the tangible field of knowledge that can be learned from resources such as books, digital articles, and community media. This knowledge is meant to be disseminated to the broader public.

I understand the esoteric archive as that which is perceptible through "rogue epistemologies" or systems of knowing that can be perceived as "UnEmpirical" under Empire. For example, oral history passed down selectively within specific lineages, connection with the unseen, and phenosomatic listening to other-than-human beings. These methodologies require relational sensing rooted in trust of our innate psychic faculties, and respect for our interdependence with both human and non-human ecologies.

In the next post, I begin an unpacking of epistemology, or how we know what we know.
