I recommend storing your generator with gasoline in it for convenience's sake, if for nothing else. However, make sure to keep your tank full, use ethanol-free gas that is treated with a stabilizer, and shut off your generator properly before storage to remove gasoline from the carburetor. You can do this by closing the fuel shutoff valve and letting the generator stall on its own, or turning the engine start switch to "off", turning off the fuel valve, and then manually draining the carburetor bowl.
