Dewalt introduced the FlexVolt line this summer and has not been shy about marketing these tools as some of the most powerful of their kind on the market. This 60 volt brushless grinder is a serious step up in ergonomics and power compared to the many other battery operated grinders on the market. Since this is a FlexVolt tool, it takes the 60 volt FlexVolt battery that is also capable of being used in Dewalts 20 volt line of tools. This tool will not take a 20 volt Dewalt Battery.

So is this the best battery operated grinder on the market? To answer that question, let's look at some of the features. The DCG414 grinder comes with guards for using both 4-1/2" and 6" wheels. It has a 5/8" spindle and is comparable to Dewalt's 13 amp corded unit in power. This grinder also has an E-clutch and kickback protection, but the best part is that they do not get in the way of getting the job done. Ergonomics are going to be a decision that will differ for many, but the slim handle of the Dewalt is very easy to use for us. With all that said, Dewalt does have a large grinder that has all the power to run 6" accessories in an awesome package and we believe that puts them at the top of the pack!

DCG414 Features

13 Amp Equivalent Motor as Compared to a D28144 Corded Unit
Brake engages when trigger is released, stopping speeds of 1.5 seconds with standard grinding wheel (4-1/2" x 1/4" Bonded abrasive wheel, non-hubbed)
Kicback Brake engages when a pinch, stall, or bind-up event is sensed and the electronic brake engages with maximum force to quickly stop the wheel, reduce the movement of the grinder, and shut the grinder off.
E-Clutch activates in less than a tenth of a second when a pinch/stall is detected, shutting down the motor.
9,000 RPM Speed allows the use of up to 6" wheels
Allows for up to 6" wheel size for both cutting and grinding applications.
Is Power Everything?

Yes, this feels to be the most powerful battery operated grinder we have used with the most comfortable feel to us. We still have to look at runtime as power output is simply a balance of technology, battery drain, and power. Dewalt's 60 volt grinder can be used for 10 to 15 minutes of constant use on one battery. While that is not industrial use times, it is doing quite well for a battery that is labeled as 6.0 Ah in 20 volt form. When the next upgrade to the Flexvolt battery comes out, that will raise to 9.0 Ah batteries increasing the runtime. The tools with a batter runtime on the market are basing those numbers on a larger battery that this tool will soon have also.

Beyond testing the grinder, we feel like we were also testing the Dewalt Flexvolt accessories while cutting, grinding and sanding. We found that these grinder accessories were top notch in comparison with the other high quality accessories we also used. Having a specific accessory that is designed for this tool helps the tool perform, but that means very little is the accessory does not last long or is costly. Dewalt's FlexVolt accessories stood the test of time and use through our testing and project.

The full line of FlexVolt tools from Dewalt have been excellent to use and have been top notch in power. They are going to be the tool most manufacturers aim to beat at this point in time.
